Angered Enzo Fernandez held back from fighting as he was taunted by a fan after Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool

Enzo Fernandez was led away by a Chelsea teammate when he was mocked by a Liverpool fan at Wembley.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has had a tough time of it since joining the club a year ago.

The London club broke the British transfer record when they paid Benfica almost £107 million for the Argentine in 2023, but he has failed to live up to the hype.

Heading into the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, Fernandez – along with Chelsea’s fans – was hoping to put some gloss on an otherwise underwhelming season.

Liverpool had other ideas though, as a 118th minute header from Virgil van Dijk clinched the trophy for Jurgen Klopp’s side and left Chelsea ruing a missed opportunity.

Chelsea’s distraught stars sank to their knees at full-time, and the last thing they needed was to be cruelly mocked as they went to collect their runners-up medals.

That’s exactly what happened though when Mauricio Pochettino and his player climbed the steps up to the famous Wembley balcony.

Footage has emerged on social media showing a Liverpool fan mocking Fernandez before getting a reaction out of the player.

As Fernandez trudged up the steps behind Mykhailo Mudryk, the fan shouted “Enzo, unlucky lad,” before he started cackling.

Enzo stopped and starred at his tormentor for a second or two, before a teammate ushered him up the steps and away from the potential flash-point.

The fan found the whole incident hilarious, and continued to let out a high-pitched laugh as the World Cup winner walked away.

It wasn’t the only incident of Chelsea being mocked for losing to a youthful Liverpool side.

Some fans accused Manchester City of mocking their former star Cole Palmer with an ill-times post on X.

Liverpool youngster Conor Bradley certainly aimed a message at Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell with his post-match Instagram post

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has explained why midfielder Enzo Fernandez can’t captain the team.

Back in January 2023, Chelsea broke the British transfer record after paying a reported fee of £106.8 million to sign Fernandez from Portuguese side Benfica.

After a tough first six months at the Stamford Bridge club, Fernandez’s performances have improved slightly in the new season.

However, Chelsea as a whole are still struggling as they have only managed to collect five points from their opening five matches.

Ahead of Chelsea’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday, Pochettino was quizzed about Chelsea’s captain hierarchy after Conor Gallagher was handed the armband last weekend.

Gallagher being given the armband came as a surprise as he was reportedly for sale in the summer, plus experienced player Thiago Silva was also on the pitch.

On the matter, Pochettino said: “Thiago is an experienced player that doesn’t need the armband.

“Then I think it’s important to build something for the future. Not only the present but the future. He is there and the captain is not only to put the armband on your arm.”

He continued: “To clarify, I think maybe it was Thiago to give it to Enzo but Enzo is still struggling with his English. If we need to communicate with the referee and everything I think Conor can perfectly do the job and for me I prefer Conor than Enzo because I think Conor can speak normally, English.

“I think Enzo is still not ready to be a captain. It is not only because of character or personality or profile. It’s about you need to communicate with the people and if you don’t manage still the language properly you cannot be captain no? I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong but it’s my opinion.
