Chelsea transfer news as the Blues boss may have to plan for life without one of his most important stars

Since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival at Chelsea in the summer, there haven’t been many more players involved in his plans as much as midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The 24-year-old has been handed the captain’s armband over the likes of experienced stars Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling while club captain Reece James and vice captain Ben Chilwell both recover from injuries and has often gone as the unsung hero of the past few seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Where other academy graduates have left the club for bigger pay checks, it’s been Gallagher who has stuck by the club even in its darkest moments of the past 25 years. In a move that could now define his career, he opted to stay with Chelsea despite incredibly heavy links moving him out of the club in the summer transfer window and with those links now resurfacing as we head into the January transfer window, he’s evidently out to prove his worth to those above Pochettino.

“It was a great moment tonight [captaining the team] and hopefully many more,” he admitted after the club’s win over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup back in August. “Everyone’s playing well, obviously a lot of top midfielders [have joined the club], but I’m just playing with quite a lot of confidence at the minute, I feel fit and strong.

“It’s great to have a great squad that we have for this season, it’s really important to help us win games. I’m happy with how it’s going so far for myself, I want to keep improving and keep helping the team get more wins.”

After that, the star laid out his bid to stay at the club to the owners in plain view for all to see, claiming Chelsea was ‘his club’ in a bid to secure a new contract, with his current deal running out in 2025. He said: “Training and playing alongside midfielders worth 100 plus million pounds is good and shows where I’m at as well. So hopefully I can continue to perform well to keep playing as many games as I can.
