Enzo Fernandez review why he fights with 24-year-old Chelsea teammate after Liverpool cup defeat

Chelsea really struggled at times in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final yesterday.

Particularly early in the first half, Chelsea looked really nervy, with the occasion perhaps too big for some of the team’s younger players.

According to football.london, at one stage, a frustrated Enzo Fernandez was urging 24-year-old goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to calm things down and slow the game a bit.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s men managed to recover from that very lacklustre start and even had chances to score in the first half.

They failed to do so, though, and were eventually punished in extra time after Virgil van Dijk used his height and strength to bag the winning goal and Liverpool the Carabao Cup trophy.

Chelsea’s poor start to Carabao Cup final
Chelsea really did not start the first half of yesterday’s final well, and it was a bit of a surprise.

Liverpool came into the fixture missing so many of their key players, including Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson. The Blues should have taken the initiative and been on the front foot as soon as the referee blew his whistle.

However, they failed to do so but got away with it at that stage. Had the likes of Salah and Diogo Jota been available, though, Chelsea probably would have conceded, certainly before extra time.

It is going to be hard, but Pochettino’s men now have to put this defeat behind them. They return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Leeds United to Stamford Bridge in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

It is pretty much a must-win game for Pochettino. His team are currently 11th in the Premier League table with nothing really to play for. Lose against the Whites, and their season could be over before the start of March. And given the inconsistency of this Chelsea side, it is certainly not impossible.
