“I’ll rather watch him playing than watching Messi” – Jermain Defoe says he would actually rather watch £45m Chelsea man play than Lionel

Jermain Defoe has claimed that there is a Chelsea man who he would rather pay to watch than any other player right now.

He told BBC Sport’s ‘The Players Channel’ that he would actually rather watch Cole Palmer play than the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo right now.

In Palmer’s first season as a regular in the Premier League, he is currently performing as the best Chelsea player this season.

He has already reached double digits in terms of goals, and remains a crucial part of the club’s attack.

Troy Deeney asked Defoe the question as to which players he enjoys watching the most right now.

He said: “In today’s game, who would you pay to watch?”

Defoe replied: “Right now? Cole Palmer.”

While obviously rating the 21-year-old highly, Deeney followed up with: “Cole Palmer? That’s a mad first name to throw out bro! I think he’s sick by the way. You could go Messi, Ronaldo, Haaland and you went Cole Palmer.”

Defoe said: “I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it. You know what I’m thinking about I want to go and watch someone who for the next 10, 15 years can be anything they want to be.

“Going forward now, I want to go and watch someone who’s young, exciting.”

Palmer is almost certainly going to be the first name on the team sheet next weekend when the Blues take part in the EFL Cup final at Wembley against Liverpool.

Despite not scoring or assisting last time out against former club Manchester City, everything seemed to go through him. It was noticeable by many that they dropped off massively when Mauricio Pochettino chose to replace him.

The bigger question will perhaps be who features in attack alongside him, with Nicolas Jackson in particular making his case to the manager that he should start after a great performance against City on Saturday.
