Chelsea fans called for Jose Mourinho during their 4-2 defeat against Wolves

Chelsea are in chaos after a 4-2 defeat against Wolves on Sunday and what better way to calm things down than replacing Mauricio Pochettino with… Jose Mourinho. A third spell at Stamford Bridge for the Portuguese disciplinarian might be the answer to elevating the Blues back among the Premier League’s elite.

Getting the band back together could be successful in uniting the fans. Supporters were heard chanting for Mourinho during the weekend’s loss, so it seems that appointing the recently-sacked former Roma boss would not be an unpopular choice. Here are five signings he could make to bring back the Chelsea of old.

Fikayo Tomori

Chelsea have spent over £300m on defensive reinforcements since the summer of 2022 and yet somehow look like they could concede at least four goals every game. Eight goals conceded in a week – four against Wolves and four against Liverpool – is a damning indictment of Pochettino’s defensive options.

Tomori’s sale to AC Milan in 2021 was controversial among supporters. The 26-year-old has since performed well in Italy.

Chelsea do not have a buy-back option to sign Tomori but Mourinho would surely want the centre-back at Stamford Bridge. A return to the Premier League would also be enticing.

Tammy Abraham

Unlike with Tomori, Chelsea have the option to buy Abraham back from Roma if they pay £69.5m. The striker shone under Mourinho in Rome, scoring 36 goals in 107 appearances under the 61-year-old.

A cruel ACL injury suffered in the summer has kept Abraham out for the entirety of this season, meaning he was unable to save Mourinho from the sack. The 26-year-old made his Chelsea debut soon after Mourinho’s departure in 2016, but became a favourite of the manager’s at Roma.

With Chelsea struggling for goals, Abraham would be an excellent addition to their forward line. Playing regularly in the Premier League might help his chances of an England recall, too.
