Mesut Ozil has claimed that Chelsea are missing the mentality of Antonio Rudiger, who plays his football at Real Madrid now.
The German defender is having an amazing season at the Santiago Bernabeu. He scored the winner for the Galacticos against Mallorca last night to keep them at the top of the table. Ozil was full of praise for the Chelsea old boy
Mesut Ozil says Chelsea are missing Antonio Rudiger’s mentality
Antonio Rudiger spent five years at Chelsea after joining them from AS Roma for £29 million (BBC) in the summer of 2017.
The German was a fantastic defender during his time in the Premier League – he was even the fastest player in the division in his final season. He helped the Blues win the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup, and was highly regarded by everyone at the club.
At the end of his Chelsea contract 18 months ago, Rudiger decided against extending his stay at Stamford Bridge. He left the Blues and joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.
He has been fantastic in Spain as well, and Carlo Ancelotti claimed last night that the German is playing at his best level.
Reacting to that, Mesut Ozil raved about Rudiger. He called him the best defender in the world and went as far as saying Chelsea miss his mentality now.
He tweeted: “Prime Toni Rüdiger is just the world’s best defender at the moment. Incredible season for my former club Real Madrid.
“You can also ask Haaland or Osimhen how good he is! Look what has happened with Chelsea after he left … they are missing his mentality every day.”
Chelsea have been awful since Rudiger left
Chelsea finished third in the Premier League table in Antonio Rudiger’s last season at the club. Since then, the Blues have really struggled.
The Londoners finished 12th last season after what was a shocking campaign, and they are currently 10th in what has been another really difficult season.
Rudiger’s quality, experience and mentality is something Chelsea are definitely missing, and Todd Boehly hasn’t been able to replace that despite spending over £1 billion.
It will be interesting to see where Chelsea will finish this season, but things are not looking great right now.
