Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly recently discussed signing one Premier League player this month.

He told his Substack that the American held a meeting to talk about potentially signing Ivan Toney, with the transfer window getting back in full swing.

It is no secret that the Blues are in a striker this month, having clearly not been completely sold on the work of Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja.

Toney is set to return to first team action this month after missing the entirety of this season due to his ban.

While there are obviously questions over match fitness, interest from both Chelsea and Arsenal has remained prominent.

It has been claimed that a fee of around £80m would be enough to get a deal over the line for the Premier League star.

Boehly discussed signing Toney

Phillips has claimed that some of the Chelsea ownership team recently discussed signing the Brentford man this month.

He said: “Ivan Toney has not been ruled out, and I understand that he was discussed again by Eghbali and Boehly during their meeting last week. But as of now, Toney probably has more stumbling blocks than Osimhen, and that is even before the fact that if given a choice he would chose Arsenal over Chelsea. However, he IS open to joining both clubs.

“The main stumbling block is the fact that not all the decision makers at Chelsea are on board with Toney, and there is one reason that I am not allowed to mention for that. The other stumbling block is the signing on fee being asked is too high at the moment.

“Chelsea have been speaking to Toney’s reps since September though, so that is why I am absolutely not ruling this one out, and because Toney does have admirers at Chelsea.”

It is important for the Blues to make sure they sign the perfect profile when bringing in a number nine, especially considering they have not spent big money on one yet.

Reports have frequently linked them with the addition of Victor Osimhen, however that is likely one that is going to have to wait until the summer if they want that one.
