“20 goals in 20 games this season” – Pochettino told to pay £60million to sign top striker

Chelsea have been told they will have to match Viktor Gyokeres’ release clause if they are to sign the Sporting CP star in January.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, though it has been reported that they face competition from London rivals Arsenal. However, Sporting boss Ruben Amorim says the Portuguese side have no intention of letting him go, insisting they will hold out for the €100 million (£86m/$109m) release clause in his contract.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the coach said on the prospect of selling Gyokeres: “He will only leave if someone pays the buyout clause in January — otherwise he will stay.”

Gyokeres joined Sporting from English Championship team Coventry in the summer transfer window and is contracted to the club until 2028. He has scored an impressive 17 goals in 19 matches in all competitions for the club, adding to his tally when he opened the scoring in their Primeira Liga match against Porto on Monday. The 25-year-old Sweden international spent three years on Brighton’s books, but made only eight appearances for the club as he was loaned out to St. Pauli, Swansea and Coventry before signing for the latter in 2021.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will be willing to match the prolific forward’s release clause in January in an effort to strengthen their attack. The goal-shy Blues have been given a boost by the return of Christopher Nkunku, who Mauricio Pochettino said will make his debut in the Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle this week.
