A lot has been made of Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling not being picked for England and Graeme Souness has claimed that the Blues winger is better than Jack Grealish.

Grealish is now a regular fixture in the England squad under Gareth Southgate. On the flipside, Sterling has found himself cast aside and despite his good form for Chelsea, hasn’t been selected again.

Sterling has been a key player in England’s rise under Southgate. But he now finds himself not even being considered and it’s baffled many a pundit. Alan Shearer recently lauded Sterling as ‘superb’, very much capturing the feeling of the footballing world right now.

And writing in his column for The Mail, former Scotland star Souness is staggered that Sterling is being overlooked for Grealish.

Graeme Souness says Raheem Sterling better than Jack Grealish
Writing for The Mail, Souness claims defenders would much rather face Grealish than Sterling.

“If you’re a full back, would you rather play against Sterling or Jack Grealish? I think 10 out of 10 would rather play against Grealish. Sterling is more dangerous than him. Defenders are terrified of pace and directness. Grealish threatens to go down the line, does a couple of stepovers and then cuts inside and plays the ball square nearly every time. Sterling goes at you and, as a defender, you’re praying you have a team-mate covering you,” Souness said.

“We’re seeing less and less of Grealish at Manchester City, and more of Jeremy Doku. Would you want to play against Doku? No, because he’s more like Sterling.”
