Chelsea news as the Blues have been sent a big warning about what not to do in the face of the Premier League leaders this weekend
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has been warned that he can’t repeat mistakes that former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel made against Manchester City in the past.
The Argentinian will face Pep Guardiola for the first time since November 2021 where the City boss recorded his 14th win over 22 meetings between the two managers, with Pochettino winning just four, the other five being draws.
However, one of Pochettino’s most infamous wins against Guardiola came as he guided Tottenham past City in a dramatic Champions League quarter-final tie back in 2019 which finished 4-4 on aggregate with the north Londoners progressing on away goals.
He’ll look to utilise a big wave of momentum that was generated as his side took advantage of ridiculous errors from Spurs defenders Cristian Romero and Destiney Udogie, who were both sent off in the 4-1 win on Monday night. It was by far the side’s biggest result in the last 18 months and could be a huge boost for the club that has been climbing the league table after a tough beginning to the campaign.
City, on the other hand, have enjoyed a strong start to the season although had hit a rocky patch in late September which saw them lose to Newcastle, Wolves and Arsenal. However, they’ve resumed their normal programming with the likes of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez leading the line.
The league leaders have won five straight, including a 6-1 blowout against Bournemouth, and have remained undefeated in the Champions League. Now former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy believes that the Blues can’t make similar mistakes against City like they have in the past, pointing out a specific performance that he doesn’t want them to repeat.
“I don’t really believe this but you never back against your team. I find it hard to do that,” Cundy admitted last night on talkSPORT.
“And this is the game. I was at Stamford Bridge two seasons ago, it was 2-0, and it was the biggest drubbing of a 2-0 you’ll ever see. They tore us apart.
“I’m going to go for a draw. But I’m not totally convinced. When you’re not convinced you go 1-1, don’t you?”
