Fabrizio Romano confirms £52m Chelsea man won’t play against Manchester City

Fabrizio Romano has shared an injury update on Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku ahead of his side’s game against Manchester City on Sunday.

A recent post on Christopher Nkunku‘s Instagram story sparked talk about the 25-year-old potentially being ready to feature this weekend and Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, provided an update on his situation.

Nkunku is yet to play a game for Chelsea after picking up an injury at the end of pre-season.

He joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in a £52m deal, as reported by

Fabrizio Romano gives update on Christopher Nkunku
According to Romano, Nkunku will not play against City on Sunday, with Chelsea not wanting to take any risks with the French forward.

On his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist said: “What I can tell you is that Chelsea will take no risks with Christopher Nkunku, so he will not be on the pitch this weekend. For Chelsea, the idea of the club is to wait, is to be careful.

“They don’t want to take any risks with Christopher Nkunku because he’s a crucial player for present and for future, for [Mauricio] Pochettino and for the club. They are all together on the same position. They believe Nkunku will be really important for the present and the future of Chelsea.”

When will Christopher Nkunku be back?
Chelsea may not be without Nkunku for much longer, with Pochettino hopeful of having the France international back after the international break.

It would come as a huge boost to the Argentine, as scoring goals has been a problem for his side at times this season, while Nkunku is a player who does not have too much trouble finding the back of the net.

Chelsea were, of course, able to put four past Tottenham Hotspur on Monday in their 4-1 win against Ange Postecoglou’s men.

However, they did finish the game with nine men, while Chelsea were not as efficient in matches versus Brentford, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth prior.

Across those four fixtures, the Blues failed to score a single goal and managed to take away just one point.

Had they had Nkunku, things may have turned out differently. He scored 16 goals in the Bundesliga last season and 20 in the campaign before, showing that the former Leipzig man can bring more firepower to this Chelsea team.
