Former Chelsea winger Pet Nevin has compared Cole Palmer to a young Kevin De Bruyne. The England Under-21s international has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge after completing a £40million summer move from Manchester City.
Palmer, 21, has become a regular face in Mauricio Pochettino’s side in recent weeks after coming off the bench in his first three games. After playing a huge role in the 2-0 win over Fulham last month, Palmer scored and assisted in the 4-1 win at Burnley before adding another against Arsenal.
With all the talent in Chelsea’s attacking ranks, Palmer is, right now, one of the most nailed on starters. And after deciding to leave Pep Guardiola’s side in an attempt for regular minutes, the winger has been compared to one of the best players in the Premier League.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Nevin has praised Palmer. “There are rays of hope (at Chelsea), however. The brightest is Cole Palmer,” he said. “I was wary of saying it out loud before but, watching him at the Bridge once again, I am convinced this lad could be world-class very soon.
“He is the closest I have seen to a young Kevin De Bruyne for a very long time.”
Nevin isn’t the only one crediting Palmer for his start to life in London. Last month, Pochettino claimed the ‘unpredictable’ attacker has been the difference to his Chelsea side. “Cole Palmer is a good link player and links with all his teammates,” he said during the last international break.
We are giving him a starting position on the right to play in between the lines because he is ready to be unpredictable. Football is a game where you need to be unpredictable and he has the capacity to do this.”
