Chelsea would not win the Premier League title even if they had Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. That is the verdict of former Blues midfielder Andy Townsend, who has rubbished Simon Jordan’s claim that the Stamford Bridge club could conquer English football in just a couple of years.

Chelsea haven’t won the Premier League since Antonio Conte’s first season in charge in 2017. It already looks beyond them this term as they sit 14 points off top spot after just 10 matches.

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to have the impact he would have wanted since starting his role as head coach on July

1. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly once again spent big in the summer to take his overall spending to over £1billion in three windows.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan said on Monday that he can see Chelsea winning the league in as little as two years but claimed Pochettino won’t be the manager to do it. He said the Argentine would only be able to challenge for the top four, claiming that would be a failure of the club’s ultimate aim.

Jordan said on talkSPORT: “I have never felt Pochettino will win them the Premier League. I thought he would get them to a point where they operate in the top four. But that is not Chelsea’s blueprint.

“The bottom line is that Chelsea will get there, they will get there, believe me they’ll get there. Chelsea will win the Premier League under Todd Boehly before the next two or three years.”

But Townsend has ridiculed Jordan’s verdict and believes his old club would still fail to win the league even with two of the world’s best players added to their squad. Mbappe came third in the Ballon d’Or votes on Monday, while Bellingham, who won the Kopa Trophy for best under-21 player, has taken to life at Real Madrid by storm.

Responding to Jordan’s claim, Townsend said: “That is some statement, I don’t see that at all. Not unless they sign Mbappe and three [players] of that level.

“Look, they are acquiring some very good young players. There is never any guarantees on young players stepping up and being able to make the difference, never!

“If Chelsea had Mbappe and Bellingham, in this current team, would they win the league? Of course they wouldn’t, no chance!”

Chelsea sit 11th in the league and face tough tests against Tottenham and Manchester City in their next two outings. Townsend is at a loss as to how badly they played in Saturday’s defeat to Brentford.

He added: “I’ve seen Chelsea a fair bit this season. I saw them against Arsenal, I thought they played very well and unfortunately didn’t win the game, a bit unlucky not to have won that game.

“At the weekend against Brentford, my goodness me, they could still be there now and they wouldn’t even have a shot, never mind score.”
