Chelsea make $24m Vinicius Jr transfer plan in shock deadline day repeat for Mauricio Pochettino
Chelsea transfer news: The Blues are not failing to disappoint with a busy deadline day as they eye one of Brazil’s next big things in a late deal.
Just when fans thought Chelsea were done with the incomings for one window they throw a late curveball into the arena. Deadline day wouldn’t be deadline day without some Blues drama and unfortunately not even high profile academy sales are going to cut it this time.
One £45million signing from Manchester City and a potential exit for a defender to Bayern Munich ought to be enough for most clubs but the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital expansion doesn’t sleep, especially not on the last day of the window.
As things looked set to wind down to a natural close for Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino it was revealed that not everything had been finalised on the incoming front. One day before the window’s end, Fabrizio Romano dropped another bombshell. “Chelsea have presented formal bid to Corinthians for 2005 born top talent Gabriel Moscardo,” he wrote.
“Bid already discussed between clubs. Told Corinthians now want €25m to sell Moscardo and make it club record sale. It’d be a signing for the future.”
That was then followed up by reports of a bid worth around £20million ($24m) for the midfield starlet and the plan to loan him back to Brazil until next year. Working with these numbers he would become the 11th teenager to join the club for a transfer fee since last summer and the sixth South American, five of those are from Brazil.
The plan to expand towards a bigger multi-club model at this stage is evident and the loan of Angelo Gabriel – one of those Brazilian sensations signed under Boehly-Clearlake – to RC Strasbourg is set to be just the tip of the iceberg for what is to come. Andrey Santos is perhaps the next most high-profile name and is currently at Nottingham Forest.
Just how all of these players work in the long-term plan at Chelsea is hard to see with clear bloating in many positions across the youth age groups. The hopes are for the very best to go on and succeed, much like the Cobham academy elite, and for the others to present a positive number in the books when sold for what is hopefully a profit down the line.
With Moscardo, who would be the 10th most expensive Brazilian to move in world football aged 19 or under according to Transfermarkt, it is immediately a tougher ask. Though he is one of the standout prospects in the country for his age, it’s a larger price than many pitch to when buying players for a multi-club system.
However, the positive is that Corinthians themselves have a strong overall record when it comes to sales. Their current record is Paulinho who went on to have a mixed career with Tottenham before moving to Barcelona. Carlos Tevez is an undoubted success though, as it Javier Mascherano and former Blues winger Willian.
Other notable players to have left the South American giants are Edu Gaspar, centre-back Felipe, Renato Augusto, Malcom and Marquinhos. They play into a wider overall success rate of young Brazilian transfers going on to do well. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo is the most expensive teenage move of all time for the country but has proved to be value for money. Vinicius Jr is in second and can say the same.
Vitor Roque and Endrick are both expected to push that pair close when they eventually form a rivalry in Spain whilst Gabriel Jesus and Marquinhos complete a star-studded top 10. Even Alexandre Pato, who fell off quickly but hit remarkable early heights, is a decent barometer.
Chelsea will certainly be hoping that they can make Santos and Moscardo to be viewed in a similar light by the end of their careers as a promising example is set for the club’s latest excursions into the market.
