Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has sent Blues supporters a promising injury update ahead of the international break as he recovers from a long-term knee injury. The star has been out since the preseason where he suffered an ACL tear in training and did not travel with the team to the U.S for their summer tour.

It’s the second major injury the star has had at Chelsea, having missed more than four months in his debut season last campaign with another knee issue. The 22-year-old also had his leg broken while playing for Leicester in the season before his £70m move to Stamford Bridge that summer.

At the time of his current injury, Pochettino was naturally disappointed at the star’s situation, but hoped that he’d return at some point later on this season. He said: “[I’m] really sad, really bad news. We feel so sad.

“All we can do is to help him. We wish him all the best and hope it’s as soon as possible [that he can] be with the team again this season. It’s tough but we need to keep going, the competition is there, less than one month to the Premier League, the competition doesn’t wait for anyone, and we need to compete.

“I hope he can be ready to play [this season]. We have seen all the information and know it can be difficult. The problem is different bodies evolve in different ways. Hopefully everything goes well with his recovery and he can be ready as soon as possible before the end of the season.”

His woes were the first sign of the serious case that Chelsea is undergoing at the moment, with the squad having been plagued with issues over the past few years. In just Pochettino’s time at the club alone, the Blues have suffered more than 15 separate player injuries marking the club as one of the Premier League’s most injured in that timeframe.

Fortunately for Pochettino, and Chelsea fans, Fofana has given an update as to how his recovery is going. Posted to his Instagram account, the star shared a photo of him touching a Chelsea flag with the caption ‘Soon’ along with a blue heart.

The post will no doubt go a long way to providing some hope that Fofana will be able to play for the Blues this season after such a brutal injury. It comes after Christopher Nkunku also provided fans with an update earlier this week, with him posting a video of him working out in the gym.

Fofana’s French international teammate also shared a video of him doing some keepy-ups, the first time he’s been spotted kicking a football since his own injury in preseason. The pair have constantly highlighted as two huge boosts that could return in the New Year, and supporters will no doubt be hoping for future updates soon from the two of them.
