Mason Greenwood ‘came up in conversations’ when Manchester Untied were negotiating with Atalanta for Rasmus Hojlund.

United were in the market for a striker this summer, and they were able to lure the Dane from Bergamo to Manchester earlier this summer. However, according to The Athletic, he ‘came up in conversations’ with Atalanta when the parties were negotiating.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022 – when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control. The striker denied all charges, and they were dropped by the CPS earlier this year.

United launched their own internal investigation into Greenwood, and his future at the club, in February 2023. And on Monday, it was announced Greenwood will not play for United again.

Greenwood has been a subject of interest in Italy, and a report at the start of the summer suggested Roma were interested in taking him on loan.

Since then, Greenwood has been linked with Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan. Turkey and even Saudi Arabia have been touted as potential destinations for him too.

Greenwood has released his own statement, and he made it clear he is keen to try and make his way back into the game: “Today’s decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me.

“The best decision for us all, is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club. I thank the club for their support since I joined aged seven. There will always be a part of me which is United.

“I am enormously grateful to my family and all my loved ones for their support, and it is now for me to repay the trust those around me have shown.

“I intend to be a better footballer, but most importantly a good father, a better person, and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch.”
