“The early tactical observations:

“Both sides are playing a flat back four – Walker is staying wide as an orthodox right-back, with Rodri and Kovacic playing as a double pivot for City. Timber is playing a left-back role for Arsenal.

“It’s basically 4-2-4 for City in possession, with Bernardo and Grealish high and wide.”

2: This may still be about fitness and preparation as we build towards the start of the Premier League season next weekend, but there’s a good intensity to the game in the early minutes.

Alvarez gets away from Partey early on, while Gabriel gives away an early free-kick as he gets too close to his man.

4: Arsenal press high as Havertz, Odegaard and Saka charge around as they look to win possession.

However, Man City’s passing stands up to the test and they beat the press to get up field.

Akanji catches Saka sleeping and he gets in behind the England international.

He delivers an excellent cross into the six-yard area but it looks like White gets a crucial touch to the ball ahead of Alvarez.

8: YELLOW! Another foul from Partey as he flicks out at Alvarez.

The Arsenal midfielder then flicks the ball away in a bid to slow down Man City, and he is shown a yellow card.

A sign of the crackdown on dissent we have been promised from referees this season.

Partey now has a tight rope to walk after that silly booking.

“Wow, we’ve heard referees are going to clamp down on dissent this season and there was certainly no hesitation from Stuart Attwell to get his yellow card out when Thomas Partey kicked the ball away.”

11: Man City are in control of this game at the moment.

They are keeping hold of the ball brilliantly.

Arsenal haven’t really got going as of yet.

14: CLOSE! Partey is holding his hands up to apologise to his team-mates.

He gives the ball away right on the edge of his own penalty area and it allows Rodri to get a shot.

The City midfielder scored in the Champions League final back in June and he was so close to the opening goal here.

The ball just flicked off Rice and flashed wide of Ramsdale’s upright.

“A few minutes to forget for Partey, with the needless booking and then that poor pass for Rice which allowed Haaland to tee up Rodri.”

It is fair to say the English and European champions have enjoyed the better of the opening quarter of an hour’s play at Wembley…

15: Plenty of defensive work for Arsenal to do so far.

They have plenty of men behind the ball at the moment.

17: Better from Arsenal as they finally get a foot to the ball through Havertz.

Rodri then gives away a foul as he drags back the former Chelsea forward with a blatant shirtpull.

Arsenal think Rodri should get a booking, especially Arteta, who is furious on the sidelines.

England manager Gareth Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland are in attendance at the home of football, with plenty of players to run their eyes over

20: Better from Arsenal.

Havertz brings a long ball down and holding it up before laying it off to Martinelli.

It launches a Gunners attack down the left as Martinelli looks to play in Timber on the overlap, but a combination of Walker and Rodri mop up the danger for City.

22: More anger from Arsenal and Arteta in particular.

Bernardo Silva cynically trips Timber as the full-back looks to break forward.

The referee awards a foul but Arteta thinks it should be a card.

The Arsenal manager will have to be careful. He will need to keep his emotions in check after that earlier booking.

25: BIG CHANCE! The best chance of the game so far goes to Arsenal.

White charges inside Akanji and he picks out Havertz, who siwvels and gets a shot away.

Ortega makes a really good save, getting a crucial foot to the ball.

The danger is not over, however, as the rebound falls to Martinelli. He gets a powerful shot away but Stones throws himself in the way to make a crucial block.

27: YELLOW! The Arsenal frustration continues.

Stones gets away from Havertz, who trips the England defender.

Stuart Attwell goes straight to his pocket to brandish a yellow card, much to the bemusement of the Arsenal fans.

City boss Pep Guardiola and his former disciple Mikel Arteta almost in unison on the touchline at Wembley…

30: A slightly worrying moment for Ramsdale…

His touch to control a back pass isn’t the best.

The ball gets agonisingly close to the goal line as Haaland charges at him, but the England goalkeeper hooks the ball clear just at the crucial moment.

31: YELLOW! Another booking. This time Alvarez kicks the ball way and he’s cautioned.

The players will have to learn pretty quickly here. We could have some extremely soft red cards in the opening weeks of the season.

36: A much better last 15 minutes or so from Arsenal. Can they keep it going?

39: BIG CHANCE! Arsenal are camped inside the City half now.

Odegaard slides the ball through for Saka, who cuts it back for Havertz.

The German international is in a brilliant position but his shot is straight at Ortega, who makes a smart block.

Havertz really should have scored there.

42: CLOSE! Rodri has Ramsdale scrambling.

We saw Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana beaten from halfway yesterday, and it was almost Ramsdale’s turn.

Rodri spots him off his line and clips a glorious effort towards goal from way out.

Ramsdale back pedals furiously and luckily for him, the ball drifts over his crossbar.
