Chelsea star Kai Havertz could be a top signing for Arsenal, claims Rangers legend Ally McCoist. However, the Scot has sent a firm message to Mikel Arteta about where to play the Germany international.

Havertz has emerged as a shock target for Arsenal this summer. Chelsea are open to selling the 24-year-old who is about to enter the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

He was the Blues’ join-leading goalscorer last season with nine goals in all competitions. He was mainly used as the preferred striker option by Graham Potter and latterly Frank Lampard.

A fee is yet to be agreed between Arsenal and Chelsea for Havertz. But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the player has given a green light to the personal terms the Gunners have offered.

McCoist is a big fan of Havertz as a player and believes there is plenty of potential yet to come out. However, he is adamant he should not be used as a central striker.

The pundit would like to see Havertz’s next club play him in a deeper role in midfield. Asked about a potential move to Arsenal, McCoist told talkSPORT: “I’m having him. I’m telling you right now, he’s been playing out of position, without a doubt, because he’s never a centre-forward.

“I specifically watched him in a couple of games I went to and he just keeps coming towards the ball, whereas nine times out of 10 a centre-forward disappears from the ball. But I think he’s a top player, I really think he’s a top player as a number 10 or a midfielder. A deeper role.

“No way an out-and-out centre-forward, for me. It does not surprise me that clubs [like Arsenal, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich] are in for him.

“He’s more forward-thinking, he’s a number 10 effectively. He takes the ball on the half-turn, always makes himself available.
