President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the resignation of Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other heads of government agencies eyeing elective positions in 2023, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

The order was given in a circular issued by Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) late on Wednesday, which Emefiele was copied.

President Buhari’s directive comes hours after an earlier one directing ministers to resign on or before May 16.

The order for Heads of extra-ministerial departments, agencies and parastatals also has the May 16 deadline.

“Heads of extra-ministerial departments, agencies and parastatals are to hand over to the most senior director/officer as may be peculiar to the organisation, in line with the service wide Circular No. SGF.50/S. Il/C.2/268 of 4th December, 2017,” the Circular reads in part.

Emefiele has been in the news with respect to the 2023 presidential election and his alleged membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) – he has not publicly admitted he is contesting.
