Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer were caught in a case of football pass the parcel as they decided who would take Chelsea’s penalty in their clash against Arsenal.
The Blues were awarded a spot-kick after VAR ruled that the ball had struck William Saliba’s hand off Mykhailo Mudryk, but there seemed to be some confusion of who would be tasked with taking the penalty.
Summer signing Cole Palmer initially picked up the ball with the intention of stepping up to the spot, only for Raheem Sterling to take the ball off the 21-year-old.
After some further discussion the ball was finally returned to Palmer by Sterling and the former Man City ace was given the opportunity to open the scoring.
Palmer then side-footed the spot-kick past David Raya to net his second goal for the club since moving from Manchester at the start of the season.
Sterling is yet to take a penalty for Chelsea, and hasn’t been the club’s designated taker since moving to west London. In fact, the 28-year-old has only taken seven spot-kicks at club level, scoring three. and missing the other four.
However, Palmer has already tasted success from the spot, having opened his Chelsea account from six yards against Burnley last time out.
Debating the incident during the half-time break, Jamie Redknapp praised Palmer for stepping up and converting the penalty.
‘I really have so much respect for the [Cole Palmer] ‘I want to take this penalty as well’ he stood up’. He told Sky Sports.
While fellow pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink highlighted the forward’s clever technique.
The Dutchman said: ‘What he does really really well in penalty taking is not easy, before the referee blows his whistle he waits and he breaks the momentum of the goalkeeper.’
The 15th minute strike put Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the lead in the pouring rain a Stamford Bridge as they look to record a third Premier League victory in a row.
Arsenal came into the game off the back of their massive win over Manchester City before the international break, but could see their unbeaten start to the season come to end against their London rivals.
