Manchester United and Inter Milan are reportedly in a tug-of-war for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard and the Premier League giants’ financial muscle could prove to be the decisive factor in the final stretch.

Several reports have already revealed that Pavard isn’t keen on staying in Munich. He has entered the final 12 months of his contract and has no desire to extend his stay.

Thomas Tuchel wants to keep the versatile Frenchman, but there’s little the Bavarians can do as keeping him for another season against his wishes would mean losing a valuable asset for nothing in the summer of 2024.

Reports in Italy suggest Inter are his preferred choice, but the Nerazzurri are yet to reach closer to Bayern’s demand of 35 million euros (£30m).

Instead, it is United, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport, who are prepared to outbid Inter and offer more to the Bundesliga side for the signing of the 27-year-old.

The Serie A side are counting on Pavard’s desire to make the deal happen, having already reached an agreement over personal terms.

The France international has been offered a four-year deal with annual wages of around 4 million euros (£13.7m across the length of the contract) to ply his trade in Milan. Even in this regard, United’s financial might is proving to be a huge hurdle for Inter, as the English side club have offered him more money.

However, the report in the Italian newspaper says the Red Devils are trying to find a new home for Harry Maguire to make room for a new defensive addition.

As such, despite being in the position to meet Bayern’s demands as well as offer Pavard a more lucrative contract, United might miss out on their target in the event the Englishman decides to continue at Old Trafford.
