Communities In Anambra Are Shielding Gunmen - Police

Echeng, who remarked that there is a conspiracy of silence among the villages, added that people are aware of the killings and kidnappings in their midst but are unwilling to speak up.

The police have accused several communities in Anambra State of shielding criminal groups that attack, kill, and maim innocent people as the state’s instability worsens.

CP Echeng E. Echeng, the State Commissioner of Police, made the claim while briefing journalists on the assassination of Anambra state legislator Hon. Okechukwu Okoye and his aide, Cyril Chiegboka.

Echeng, who remarked that there is a conspiracy of silence among the villages, added that people are aware of the killings and kidnappings in their midst but are unwilling to speak up.

He further added that people “mystify” individuals responsible for violent acts by labeling them “unknown gunmen” although they are well-known in diverse regions.

He Said;

“Some of us have come out to label these people as unknown gunmen, even if they are known in reality.” We’re attempting to decipher something that isn’t simply there. It’s past time to debunk the term “unknown gunman.” They are not spirits; they are our brothers who share our neighborhoods with us. That is the undeniable truth.

“We know who these individuals are. The state security problem is a comprehensive conspiracy of silence, in which no one sees anything, says nothing, or hears anything. Everyone has a battle in terms of security. Crimes are perpetrated in our communities, and we should be able to say that this is what is going on in our neighborhoods.

“We’re praising people we know and labeling them as unidentified gunmen.” They are human beings, and we know them and have arrested some of them.”

Echeng further stated that, while the police are working to reduce violent crime, the state is plagued by neighboring states and that it is simple to move in and out.

He added;

“You will hear something starting tonight because we cannot carry on like this.” We’re taking the fight to them, and we’re confident we’ll win.”
