Chelsea’s January spending won’t have a significant impact on signing an elite striker without exceeding £100m

It’s the Chelsea way this season – get a couple of good results and feel like things are coming together, then get a bad one and start getting linked with new signings to fix things.

So after a weekend where we lost 4-1 to Newcastle, the inevitable next step is a slew of links to elite players, in this case the Telegraph pumping up our interest in Victor Osimhen once again.

Their claims are that the Nigeria striker is open to a move to Chelsea, and that Nicolas Jackson isn’t cutting it. That may well all be true, but sadly buying Osimhen is going to require a lot more than that. £100m is probably only enough to open the bidding.

Through all the chaos, the simple truth remains – you can’t always fix everything by simply signing new players. That’s always been the case, and the last 18 months should have been a crash course in that lesson for the new ownership.
