Rio Ferdinand reveals why Mason Mount will be successful at Manchester United despite struggling start ‘Chelsea can’t do this for him’
Rio Ferdinand hints Mason Mount is struggling because Man Utd are a bigger club than Chelsea
Mount swapped west London for Old Trafford this summer in a £60m deal but the England international has failed to impress so far under Erik ten Hag.
The 24-year-old midfielder has made nine appearances for the Red Devils, registering just one assist amid a series of poor performances.
Mount came through Chelsea’s academy and spent his entire career at the club before his summer switch to United – with loans at Vitesse and Derby County before he broke into the Blues XI – and Ferdinand feels the Englishman is still not used to the level of scrutiny that comes with being a United player
No disrespect to Chelsea but he was a golden boy and he came through the ranks there,’ Ferdinand said after Mount’s performance in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
He was never really on the receiving end of negativity or scrutiny, ‘Should he be here, he’s not good enough, should he be here?’ – He’s never had that in his life really.
‘He needed backing from Frank [Lampard] when he was at Derby and then when he went back to Chelsea.
But the pressure when you come to Man United, it brings a different kind of weight on the shoulders, the badge is heavier when things aren’t going well.
‘He is seeing and hearing that now. I just think players need time. As long as he gets chances in the right area of this football club Mason Mount is a sure-fire bet to make it as a Man United player.’
Mount will next be hoping to make an impact when United travel to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday.
