“Shocking” reason Igbos don’t travel home for election – Reno Omokri
A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has said Igbo people are enthusiastic about travelling home for Christmas festivity and not for voter registration or election, because “money is sweet than election”.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that according to Omokri, who hails from Delta State in Nigeria’s South-South region, this mindset by Ibo people is ‘the reason behind the low voter turnout in the southeast region’.
“I had discussions with my Igbo associates about why they are willing to return home for Christmas, but not for voter registration or election. Their response? Ego na su so kari election! Shocking. I know. But that is the reason behind the low voter turnout in the SE,” Omokri wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Sunday night.
Igbo people have been accused of marginalising themselves. In January, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Anambra State chapter, condemned the attitude of the people in the South-East towards the continuous voter registration exercise.
The group blamed the failure by various political groups, religious bodies, traditional societies, markets and rights leaders to mobilize and educate the citizenry towards the consciousness of such exercise.
